Ernest Watson Burgess was born in Tilbury, Canada on May 16, 1886. His father, Edmund J. Burgess was a minister in the Congregation Church and his mother was Mary Ann Jane Wilson Burgess. Burgess received his B.A in 1908 at Kingfisher College in Oklahoma.The following year, he enrolled at the University of Chicago, majoring and graduating as a student in the Department of Sociology. In 1913, he received his Ph.D. In 1968, after years of teaching at several mid-western and participating in many social surveys, he returned to the University of Chicago as the assistant professor of in sociology. His career has spanned five decades, starting in 1916 and ending in 1957. Burgess continued to be active after retirement, like how he founded the Family Study Center. Burgess died on December 27, 1966 at 80 years old.
